8 different types of orgasm and how to have them (using sex toys)

Having an orgasm shouldn’t be the only goal of sexual play and pleasure but it sure can be fun when you have one. Here’s a rundown of what an orgasm is and the different types of orgasms you can explore. And, of course, a few sex toys to help you along the way to each one.
What is an orgasm?
In short, an orgasm is a pleasurable release of sexual tension. It’s the physical reflex that occurs following the tightening of the muscles during sexual arousal. During orgasm, our muscles relax through a series of rhythmic contractions.
Orgasm occurs during the 4th stage of the sexual response cycle according to the Masters & Johnson model. Following anticipation, excitement & plateau.

It may include:
- Involuntary release of muscle tension
- Series of rhythmic muscular contractions
- Verbal & auditory emissions of pleasure
- Increased heart and breathing rate
There’s also plenty of emotional effects that occur when you orgasm too. During climax your brain releases a bunch of hormones and chemicals involved in the reward centre of the brain that leave us feeling really good.
- Dopamine, the happiness hormone.
- Serotonin, another happiness hormone that is associated with satisfaction.
- Oxytocin, the love hormone that helps support well-being.
- Endorphins, the feel-good chemicals which reduce pain.
- Adrenaline, which regulates your heart rate and lowers stress.
- Norepinephrine, which regulates dopamine transmission to boost that happy feeling.
- Prolactin, a hormone that regulates stress and your emotions.
- Endocannabinoids, neurotransmitters that are vital to reward behaviours in the brain.
An orgasm is an orgasm and what happens physiologically and emotionally is the same no matter which part of the body you were stimulating to make that orgasm happen. However, educators & scientists agree that orgasms come in a variety of lengths, intensities and qualities.
Here are a few different ways to bring your body to orgasm using sex toys!
1. Clitoral Orgasms
The clitoris is the epicentre of pleasure for most that have one. It has thousands of nerve endings, so stimulation of this area is what brings many people to orgasm as it’s so sensitive. There’s a lot more to the clitoris than what you can see! The external part of the clitoris – the glans
Erectile tissue that swells with blood when aroused. More pleasure! Stimulating the clitoris or labia surrounding it encourages blood flow to the area which in turn encourages orgasm.
The clitoris extends deep inside the body and can be stimulated indirectly from inside your body too, via the vagina or the anus (more on that later).
There are two main types of sex toys designed to achieve clitoral orgasm.
Clitoral vibrators
Clitoral vibrators come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and use vibration to stimulate the clitoris and vulva. Vibration is a great tool for stimulating the nerve endings and encouraging blood flow to the whole genital area.
Bullet vibrators and wand vibrators are both popular toys for clitoral orgasms.

Clitoral suction toys
Clitoral suction toys use air pressure rather than vibration on the clitoris for pleasure. This is an intense stimulation style where air is moved around the clitoris to encourage a lot of blood flow and create a pulsing sensation that often leads to orgasm relatively quickly for some people.

2. Vaginal Orgasms
A vaginal orgasm is an orgasm that results from stimulation of the vagina (that doesn’t stimulate the g-spot). Multiple hot spots within the vagina can feel pleasurable for people. The entrance to the vagina has a high density of nerve endings which is why even shallow penetration can feel great to people.
Deeper inside the vagina towards the cervix is the A-spot, an area that can trigger deep vaginal orgasms for some people.
Vaginal orgasms from penetration or internal massage can feel amazing but they are rarer than clitoral orgasms as the vagina doesn’t have anywhere near as many nerve endings as the clitoris does.
Science suggests that vaginal orgasms happen as a result of indirect stimulation of the internal structure of the clitoris. The legs of the clitoris extend along behind the walls of the vaginal canal, so penetration of the vagina can stimulate those.
The main types of toys for vaginal orgasms are classic vibrators and dildos.
Classic vibrators
Classic vibrators are internal vibes designed to stimulate the vagina with vibration. They tend to be non-anatomical looking aka they don’t look like a penis, and may have either a smooth or textured surface.

Dildos
Dildos are non-vibrating internal toys. They might be a replica of a penis or have a smooth or textured surface. Dildos are commonly made of silicone which is body-safe and can be made to feel soft and skin-life or be relatively firm.

3. G-spot Orgasms
A g-spot orgasm occurs as a result of vaginal stimulation that targets the g-spot. This is an area of increased sensitivity about 2 inches inside the vaginal canal on the anterior wall towards the belly button.
There’s been some mystery around the g-spot as a 2012 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found little anatomical proof of the g-spot as there was no area with a higher density of nerve endings.
In 2014, a study published in Nature Reviews showed that researchers had identified an area they called the Clitourethrovaginal complex or CUV complex for short. They found that there is a spot inside the body where the internal structure of the clitoris, the urethral sponge and the anterior wall of the vagina connect and when properly stimulated, it can induce orgasmic responses. The g-spot doesn’t exist independently but is part of an area where multiple parts of our sexual anatomies intertwine.
So, if we want to be scientifically accurate, we can call it the clitourethrovaginal complex, but it’s a lot, so sticking with the g-spot is fine too.
The main types of toys for g-spot orgasms are g-spot vibrators or g-spot dildos. G-spot-specific sex toys will usually have a curved or bulbous tip to ensure that they are hitting the right place.

The G-spot responds well to direct massage so firmer materials like glass or metal are popular for G-spot dildos. Silicone dildos are also super popular for g-spot orgasms where the user wants a bit more softness.

4. Blended Orgasms
A blended orgasm may happen when you stimulate the clitoris and the G-spot at the same time. For some people, this may feel more intense than an orgasm from clitoral or G-spot stimulation only. It is usually felt deep inside the body.
To achieve this type of orgasm with a sex toy, look for a dual-stimulation sex toy that has a clitoral stimulator and a vaginal stimulator.
A rabbit vibrator is an ideal toy for this. There are classic rabbits where both ends will vibrate or even suction rabbits where the clitoral end will use clitoral suction rather than vibration. Like the super famous Kama by Share Satisfaction, one of our best-selling sex toys.

5. Anal Orgasms
The whole anal area is highly sensitive and highly pleasurable for many people. It’s full of nerve endings that feel amazing when stimulated and you can indirectly stimulate other areas via the anus too. The prostate can be stimulated via the booty and even the legs of the clitoris – yes, they can extend that far back.
Some people will find that they need to stimulate other areas to achieve an anal orgasm. So, you might want to stimulate the penis, clitoris or vagina at the same time.
Anal orgasms are often achieved using anal toys alongside stimulation of other genitalia like the clitoris or penis at the same time. Anal beads and butt plugs are great tools for this.
Butt Plugs
A butt plug can be inserted and left in place during play to stimulate the nerve endings near the sphincter muscles creating a feeling of fullness and stretch.

6. Prostate Orgasms
A prostate orgasm may happen as a result of stimulation of the highly sensitive prostate. The prostate or p-spot is a walnut-sized gland that can be stimulated internally via the anus or externally via the perineum.
The p-spot can be located internally on the anterior wall of the anus about 2 – 3 inches inside up towards the penis. When aroused, the prostate will engorge with blood making it easier to locate. If you don’t want to access it via the anus, you can also stimulate it with pressure against the perineum.
Lots of those that experience them say they result in a more full-bodied feeling compared to penile orgasms so it’s definitely an area worth exploring!
There are plenty of prostate toys for stimulating the area. Like the g-spot, this area responds best to massage or direct pressure so firmer silicone is a popular material for p-spot toys.

7. Penis Orgasms
A penis orgasm occurs as a result of stimulation of the penis. The penis is a highly sensitive part of the body with a high density of nerve endings over the glans of the penis (the head). The majority of the nerve endings of the penis are here rather than along the shaft however many still find it a pleasurable area to stimulate too.
Masturbators
There are lots of penis toy styles to try, many of which attempt to replicate the feeling of penetrative sex or a blowjob like penis masturbators. These tend to be made from very soft and skin-like materials like TPE or TPR.

Vibrating Penis Toys
There are also penis vibrators that use vibrations to add even more fun while you play. Penis vibes with an open-wing design can be used without an erection as the wings can be opened to accommodate a flaccid penis.
Fun fact: you don’t need an erection to have an orgasm. Many people that can’t become erect can still experience an orgasm!

8. Nipple Orgasms
The breasts and nipples are major erogenous zones of the body and contain many nerve endings. This makes them a pleasure hot spot for lots of people and for some lucky people, stimulating them can even result in orgasm.
That’s in part because stimulating the nipples releases oxytocin causing the same pelvic contractions that are associated with orgasm. This stimulation activates the genital sensory cortex inducing pleasure, relaxation and increased blood flow. Three things that are central to orgasm.
Nipple toys are an awesome way for people to explore nipple stimulation as there are so many ways to stimulate them. Clamps, feather ticklers, nipple vibrators or even flicking tongue toys are all great for nipple play.
