Should the Bachelor Australia Bring Back Overnight Dates?

Should the Bachelor Australia Bring Back Overnight Dates?

The current difference between the Australian Bachelor and the American version of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette is that the final three contestants have the opportunity to spend the night in the Fantasy Suite. No cameras, no audio recording, quality time to get to know someone without any worries of mediation. Whatever happens in the fantasy suite, stays in the fantasy suite.

Tim Robards from Australia's first ever series of The Bachelor (2013) was given the opportunity for his last three contestant to be taken on overnight dates. However, he turned down the offer with all three hopefuls and from that point on the fantasy suite vanished, never to be seen again (except for in America).

"One-on-one" time is highly implicative of sex. Whether contestants really have sex on any season or version of the show has been a popular question. And Dorfman who is notable as a contestant of the eighteenth season of The Bachelor *US wrote in a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter "almost every Bachelor has sex with everyone he goes into the Fantasy Suites with." Whilst former Bachelorette Ali Fedotowsky stated to Hollywood Today Live "on my season, I know I wanted to be with one guy, so I didn't even want to spend the night with the other guy. So I asked one of the producers to call and make up an excuse for me to be able to leave the room." Former Bachelors such as Sean Lowe (US, Season 17) simply said that he wasn't ready for any such date to happen with any of the remaining contestants.

Obviously, there are ethical and intimacy issues with the show incorporating overnight dates. If you've got your heart decided on one, then you probably don't want to have a date with the others. On the other hand, if you are a contestant, you don't want to feel as if an overnight date might be the influencing factor that is going to help you win. We can all agree such pressure is unethical.

The other negative was the slut shaming that has been associated with the overnight dates in the past. Kaitlyn Bristowe who hooked up with Nick Viall on The Bachelorette discussed the sexist public reaction she received in an interview with People "I think it's a double standard, for sure," she said. "I don’t feel ashamed about the act of sex in the relationship." Well said!

It's 2018! You would hope that people aren’t so sensitive towards or judgemental towards the implication of sex on TV. This is the era of Tinder and quick hook ups, is it not?

SEX DOESN'T DEFINE A RELATIONSHIP. Yes you are absolutely right but it's still worthwhile information to know about before committing to a romantic relationship!

We saw Nick 'The Honey Badger' Cummins get pretty intimate on the latest series of The Bachelor in Australia. Getting wet with some dry humping next to the pool or getting steamy in the hot tub. Yet we don't really know whether anyone took it to the next level. However, let's imagine they did! It's a great way of connecting together. Maybe the bachelor or bachelorette discover satisfaction they've never experienced before. Maybe they discover that they have fetishes that align perfectly, or maybe not so much. The point is, wouldn't you rather know this before getting too serious with someone?

It's not all about boning! Being away from the camera is a chance for real one-on-one time. For once, not doing things for the camera or worrying about what the camera will pick up. Revealing personal things that they maybe don't want the rest of the world to know. It’s time to figure out whether this person is a genuine match or have they been faking it till they make it the entire show?

Another issue that can leave viewers dissatisfied is discovering that the ending couple has split. In fact, they've basically split as soon as the show finished. Maybe overnight dates would help in either helping said bachelor or bachelorette finding someone they actually want to stay with! The most successful couple of recent being Art Green and Matilda Rice. Who have been together since 2015, even announcing they were getting engaged last year.
