New Zealand's sexual satisfaction is '50/50' according to Kiwi Sex Survey results

When it comes to New Zealand's sexual satisfaction, having sex once or twice a week is enough to please the average New Zealander, Kiwis masturbate one or two times per week, and 13 is our lucky number when it comes to how many sexual partners we've had, according to the Adulttoymegastore Kiwi Sex Survey results.

The Adulttoymegastore Kiwi Sex Survey 2017, which was conducted by New Zealand adult toy and lingerie retailer Adulttoymegastore and hosted by Colmar Brunton, surveyed more than 1,500 New Zealanders about how they think and feel about sex, their sexual satisfaction, sexual behaviour and more.

A total of 1,008 people were surveyed through the Colmar Brunton online research panel, to match the demographic profile of New Zealanders for age, gender and region. An open survey link was also placed on the Adulttoymegastore website (which was completed by 555 people) to see if there were differences between the sexual views and behaviours of the two groups.

According to the sex survey results, fifty per cent of New Zealanders are happy with their sex lives and the frequency they have sex. The other half? Not so much.

Those who are happy with their sex lives are having sex once or twice a week on average, and those who are unhappy with their sex lives are having sex less than once or twice a month. Kiwis would like to be having sex 2-3 times a week.

One in six Kiwis have sex less than once a year, and one in six people think their sex life is monotonous and boring. One in four New Zealanders believe they have a low sex drive.

Sex is important to three out of five Kiwis, and more than half of New Zealanders agree that great sex is key to a happy relationship.

Survey respondents from Hamilton were more likely than the other regions to have sex a few times a week or more, with 41% people choosing this option. We had 54 respondents from Hamilton.

In the Tasman/Nelson/Marlborough region we had 30 respondents to the Adulttoymegastore sex survey, and 50% of those respondents told us they have sex a few times a year or less. However, 10% have sex a few times a week, another 10% have sex at least weekly, and another 20% have sex at least monthly.

The respondents who were more likely to state they were satisfied with their frequency of sex were from Hawkes Bay/Napier/Hastings, Canterbury/Christchurch and Palmerston North.

Respondents living in Dunedin/Otago, Wellington and Canterbury/Christchurch were less likely than the other regions to state that they were satisfied with the frequency of which they are having sex. However, the difference between regions is marginal.

According to the survey results, Adulttoymegastore customers have sex twice as often as the Kiwi average, they have a higher number of sexual partners, and they masturbate twice as much.

Although Adulttoymegastore customers are having more sex than the New Zealand average, their satisfaction with the amount of sex they have is similar to the rest of the country, proving that more sex doesn't automatically lead to increased sexual satisfaction.

Only three percent of Kiwis aged 18 years and older are virgins. They are most likely to be 18-29 and single.

What are NZ's sexual satisfaction results by region?

The sexual satisfaction of New Zealanders with their frequency of sex is 50% are satisfied, 27% are dissatisfied, and 23% are neither nor. The most popular answers for this section of questioning are as follows:

Respondents more likely to be satisfied with their frequency of sex based on the most popular answers by region:

• Hawkes Bay/Napier/Hastings (53% satisfied)
• Canterbury/Christchurch (53% satisfied)

Respondents from these regions were less likely to state that they were satisfied with their frequency of sex when compared with the other regions:

• Dunedin/Otago (40% satisfied)
• Wellington (43% satisfied)

What does a sexually satisfied Kiwi look like?

• Has sex 1-2 times a week
• Masturbate once a week
• Are in a committed relationship
• Open to trying new things in the bedroom
• Confident asserting their sexual needs with their partner
• Agree sex is important to them
• Think great sex is key to a happy relationship
• Are confident with their sexual performance
• Actively try to keep the intimacy alive in their relationship

Sexually unsatisfied Kiwis:

• Have sex once a month or less
• Are single, recently divorced or separated, or a widower
• Likely to be aged 35 - 39 years old.
• Unconfident with their sexual performance
• Unconfident asserting their sexual needs and desires
• Less likely to actively try to keep the intimacy alive in their relationship

How the research was conducted:

• The survey was conducted online and hosted by Colmar Brunton.
• There were two different sample sources for this survey. A total of 1,008 people were recruited through the Colmar Brunton online research panel, to match the demographic profile of New Zealanders for age, gender and region. The maximum margin of error on a sample size n=1,008 is +3.1%.
• Only regions with 30+ respondents were included in the regional data segmentation.
• An open survey link was also placed on the ATMS website, which was completed by 555 people. The maximum margin of error on a sample size n=555 is +4.2%. The results from this group are highlighted and compared with the national average.
• The survey was in field from 4th – 17th September 2017.
• The average interview length was 12 minutes.
