Rita Kim (She/Her) is a bisexual artist and writer residing in Wellington, New Zealand. She grew up in an uber-conservative Christian household (someone play Maggie Rose’s A Preachers Daughter!) and was told to never, ever talk about sex. As one could imagine from growing up in a strict household, Rita grew up to become a scandalous, unapologetically spicy artist and writer who sought out the “sinful things” her parents told her not to do, including sex! During her time doing her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from Massey University, Rita explored in her art female sexuality, Christianity’s influence on sexual liberal societies such as Ancient Rome or Edo era Japan, consumer consumption of Pornography in the digital age and aspects of sexuality that have been misunderstood or considered transgressive within mainstream media. Her degree has allowed Rita to hone her writing, research and communication skills to better articulate her artistic work. She’s passionate about opening dialogue about sex positivity, sexual empowerment, reviewing what mainstream media got right and wrong about sex (looking at you Fifty Shades), and exploring and dispelling sexual myths about the kinkier stuff, such as BDSM and Hentai (Japanese illustrated Pornography). Not only does she rave about these topics, but Rita is also a huge history nerd and has done extensive research on the history of human sexuality, covering topics such the history of Tentacle Porn, the origin of certain sexual stereotypes and is the Prince Albert piercing really from Prince Albert? In her spare time, Rita is working on her art, playing video games and eating.
