Dunedin and the Art of the “Naked Selfie”

Dunedin and the art of the “Naked Selfie”

Selfies, belfies, nudes, whatever you call them. Naked selfies have become an incredibly popular and common practice in today's society, with Dunedin taking the cake as the naked selfie capital of New Zealand! Dunedin is a student hotspot, and has grown quite a reputation over the years with crazy Hyde Street parties, alcohol-fuelled O-weeks, and general drinking culture. The University of Otago offers a variety of degrees for prospective students, ranging from art and design to science and medical. No matter your field, students certainly don’t hold back from enjoying a few brews in the rare Dunedin sun!

Aside from the vibrant student life, Dunedin has many popular attractions and sightseeing spots, including the infamous Tunnel Beach (perfect for that Instagram-worthy shot) and Larnach Castle, for all your culture and history needs. With a range of cafés and restaurants, Dunedin has something for everyone! But despite its rich culture, intricate old buildings, and history, it seems residents of Dunedin are more focused on the world of social media than the world around them!

Sending 'nudes'

According to our Kiwi Sex survey, 1 in 4 Kiwis have sent a naked selfie. But do we really know where these photos are ending up? Whether you keep up-to-date with celebrity gossip or not, you've likely heard of at least one or two scandals involving leaked nudes and photos at some point or another.

Popular photo sharing platform Snapchat allows users to send photos, messages, and videos to other members. The major appeal of Snapchat was the fact that photos have a 10-second limit before they supposedly disappear forever. Of course, this quickly became the go-to method of sending risqué photos. In theory, as long as the receiver didn't screenshot your photo, you were in the clear. However over the years, dozens of apps have been developed to allow receivers to record and store media without the sender even knowing. Alongside allegations that photos don't actually disappear forever, Snapchat is no longer considered a safe medium for sending sensitive content. Anything you post on social media or the Internet will be there forever, and it's important to remember that even if you've deleted something, it might be too late to completely erase it.

Play it safe

With dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble, and social media such as Instagram and Snapchat, it's easier than ever to chat with people from all around the world. You should always consider who you are talking to, what you sending them, and how much personal information you give out.

If you are still inclined to send a naked selfie, there are several precautions you should take to ensure they don't end up in the wrong hands. Remember, all it takes is one photo for someone to use as blackmail or potentially damage your future reputation in jobs, relationships, and opportunities. Play it safe, always!

  1. Set rules Not everyone might be as safety-savvy as you are! Communicate with whoever you are exchanging photos with and clarify whether you're okay with them saving your photos or not. While there are still many apps and ways for them to record without you knowing, it's always a good idea to talk to them about it too. Make sure they know that you don't want them sharing the photos around either, so everything is out in the open and your expectations are met. If they hesitate or try to argue against any of the rules you set, then it's definitely a red flag and you should reconsider sending them the photos at all.

  2. Stay anonymous If the person you are sending intimate photos to, is someone that you haven't been seeing or talking to for long, or you're not quite sure you trust them yet, stay anonymous! Ensure any distinguishable features are hidden. Hide your face, any tattoos, birth marks, and anything that is unique to you. This will ensure that, if your receiver decides to save or record your photos in any way, it will be much harder to trace them back to you.

  3. Know your rights If worse comes to worse and you do find yourself in a sticky situation, it's important to know your rights and understand what you can do. Websites such as Net Safe can help keep you informed and safe!

Naked selfies, or nudes, can be thrilling and exciting, particularly for those rowdy uni students down South! However there is a certain level of caution and discretion that should be ensured when sending anything intimate to anyone. And if you're not sure, you can always say no!
