Detection, Protection, Prevention - Teenagers Create Condoms That Glow When Exposed to STIs
A group of teens taking place in the U.K.s TeenTech Awards have created a condom that glows in the presence of sexually transmitted infections.
The idea behind the design is that the condom, called the S.T.EYE could be both a preventative measure, but also a testing function for STIs.
The condom features a special chemical on the surface that reacts to the bacteria and viruses associated with certain STIs. The condom will take on a fluorescent glow when it comes into contact with these bacteria.
The condom will also change colour depending on the type of infection present, yellow for herpes, green for chlamydia, blue for syphilis and purple for HPV.
14 year old Daanyaal Ali, one of the creators of the product, stated that they wanted to create a product that could make detection easy, safe and private.
The product has had a bit of a backlash from the public as the condoms only detect STIs of those on the receiving end, which in most cases will be women, as the chemical is only on the outer surface of the condom.
It is yet to be determined whether the product will be made available to the public.
