Sex in The City: Adulttoymegastore Founder Interviewed by Wellington City Libraries

Wellington City Libraries recently interviewed Adulttoymegastore founder and CEO Nicola Relph for the article “Sex in the City: an interview with Nicola Relph, founder of Adulttoymegastore".

Journalist and Librarian Linda interviewed Nicola to see the business behind NZ's biggest Adult E-Comm Retailer, from how Adulttoymegastore began, to Covid challenges and the ''what now".

Relph states that Adulttoymegastore "launched back in 2009 with the sole purpose of making pleasure products more accessible to people." Relph's venture began on Trade Me, where she found that E-commerce excelled in offering a discrete and less-confronting way to purchase sexual wellbeing products. After testing the waters, it became clear that the NZ market needed Adulttoymegastore. The business quickly expanded to a full-scale web platform and the product offering and shipping country options grew with it.

It was the same need for accessible sexual wellbeing products that saw Adulttoymegastore's sales skyrocket in Covid. Relph states, "On day two of the lockdown, I went to the supermarket and there wasn’t a single condom on the shelf. This was a serious problem, and an opportunity. I approached MBIE very quickly about being an essential service. Our warehouse is Medsafe certified for the provision of condoms, lubricants, provision of post cancer care, and menstrual cups. MBIE said “Absolutely, you can”. Because we could still trade our sales went through the roof."

Since Covid, Adulttoymegastore has continued to grow, becoming an award-winning E-comm business with over 40,000 products on the shelves. "It’s in our name – we’re a megastore. We like to not put any constraints on what people are looking for."

It's not just about accessibility with Adulttoymegastore. Linda finds that education, solid product offering and team attitude are just as important to Adulttoymegastore and its ongoing success.
