What is the teddie?
A teddie (or teddy) is a piece of lingerie that combines a camisole with panties.
The earliest versions of the 'teddie' design date back to early 1910. Yet it wasn't until the turn of the 1920s that Theodore Baer formally took ownership of the design when he combined a chemise with a slip and attached knickers.
Over the next 10 years the teddie quickly became the staple item of every woman's wardrobe. As women embraced shorter dresses in the late 20's, teddies proved to be the perfect undergarment. Their popularity continued to soar during the 30s and 40s as women who served in military-related roles during World War II found themselves opting to don the teddie under their uniforms.
How has the style of teddies have changed over time?
Since the teddie style of lingerie rose to prominence in the 1940s, the feminine design has come in and out of fashion at various times.
In 1960s a version of the teddie, dubbed the 'braslip', found popularity among younger women. Featuring a bra top attached to a slip, many women opted for the braslip over a normal slip when wearing more fitted clothes or trousers.
Later, from 1980 - 1990, teddies made a comeback two-fold. According to Noel Duan of Elle, one-piece teddies returned to favour as comfortable sleepwear. And as the power suits graced women's corporate fashion, the teddie quickly became the go-to lingerie item, renowned for its subtle feminine style.
Modern lingerie: What is the difference between a romper, playsuit and teddie?
Nowdays, teddies are often grouped with rompers and playsuits. Though the trio can share a similar design and aesthetic, the main difference between a romper, playsuit and teddie is the cut and the overall intention of the wearer.
Traditionally playsuits and rompers were more form-fitting and were designed to be worn underneath clothes as both an undergarment, and in more recent times as shapewear. They were designed for the comfort of the wearer and often featured a cut that would be practical for the wearer.
Teddies on the other hand have always been considered 'lingerie' and were designed specifically to add a sense of sensuality and seduction to an outfit. Historically, teddies were considered the type of lingerie brides would wear under their wedding dress.

The first style (teal) is a loose-fit teddy. The second piece is a mix between a romper and a playsuit. The third (blue) is a form-fitting bodysuit.
