Can We Make 'Klittra' Happen? Sweden Invents New Name for Female Masturbation
Sweden assigns a new name to the act of female masturbation in an attempt to banish what was previously a taboo subject.
The act of women pleasuring themselves didn't previously have a name in the Scandinavian country. A competition launched last year by the not for profit group the Swedish Association for Sexual Education (RFSU) to find a word for female masturbation.
The Swedish public were left to choose their favourite word from a shortlist, the word chosen was "klittra", which is reportedly a combination of clitoris and glitter.
The term was officially adopted by the RFSU at its congress last week in a bid for greater gender equality in the country.
A spokeswoman for the RFSU stated, "Women are not expected to have desires and be turned on in the same way as men, which is reflected in the lack of words (for masturbation)".
