Adults Are Having Less Sex Than They Did 20 Years Ago

Research has found that millennials are having less sex then their grandparents did at their age and it's believed to be because they are spending too much time on Facebook or watching too much porn.

A research examined the sex lives of 26,000 Americans since June 1989 and it discovered that adults are having sex eight times less a year than they did a decade ago.

The research found that people had sex on average 62 times a year between 2000 and 2004, but between 2010 and 2014, this figure dropped to an average of only 54 times a year.

And while people in their 20s and 30s are having less sex than older generations did, married couples have seen their sex lives fizzle out faster than those who are single.

Researchers believe that the increase in availability of social media, computer games and porn has given people other "pleasurable options", while kids are staying at home longer, preventing them from getting intimate.

Meanwhile people are also tying the knot later in life at a time when they are less likely to have sex.

Professor Jean Twenge, who led the study at San Diego State University, said, "The ubiquity of entertainment and social media options in recent decades, from streaming video to gaming to Facebook, may also make sexual activity just one of an array of pleasurable options".

In addition, the increased availability and consumption of pornography may provide sexual outlets outside of sex with a partner.

"Despite their reputation for 'hooking up', millennials and the generation after them (Gen Z), are actually having sex less often than their grandparents did when they were young. One reason for this is because fewer Gen Y + Z have steady partners".

People who were married had sex an average of once a week, or 51 times a year between 2010 and 2014, which was down 16 times on the previous period.

But for those who were single saw their tally fall by just four, from 37 to 33 times a year, despite a rise in internet dating and one night stands.

These research findings really don't surprise me, especially with the increase in normality of casual sex. These days it seems its more about the amount of people you have sex with, rather than how much sex you are actually getting. Which to me is baffling.
